SUMMARY:Free symposium in Rotterdam: Too Close!
DESCRIPTION:Happening on Friday October 23rd: Too Close! On the Pleasures and Perils of an Entangled Existence\, a one-day symposium on what relationality means in theory and practice. \n\n\nShort content:\n\n\nWe know that more just and equitable relations between humans and between humans and non-humans are absolutely necessary to everyone’s future survival\, but what does it actually mean to say that everything is relational and everything is connected? If everything is entangled with everything else\, in what terms can we begin to understand modes of being in relation? What happens if we take relation(ality) as our starting point\, both theoretically and materially? And how might we cope with living with that which constantly feels too close for comfort? \n\n\n\n\n\nThis is a free event with ample tea and coffee provided throughout the day\, and enough breaks to take everything in and digest all the content… \n\n\nThe event page with sign-up link and a downloadable full day programme can be found here: https://vu.nl/en/events/2026/too-close-the-pleasures-and-perils-of-an-entangled-existence \n\n\nSpeakers\n\nKathrin Thiele (Universiteit Utrecht)\nWendy Wuyts (TU Eindhoven)\nKatja Kwastek (VU Amsterdam)\nSebastian Scholz (VU Amsterdam)\nAudronė Žukauskaitė (Lithuanian Culture Research Institute)\nJort van der Laan (Universiteit Leiden).\n\n\n\nDay Programme\n10:00-10:30: Walk-in and registration with coffee and tea \n10:30-10:50: Words of welcome by organising team \nSession 1: Relationality in theory and practice \n10:50-11:20: Relation(ality) as Starting Point: Onto-Epistemology\, Viscerality\, Politics by Kathrin Thiele \n11:20-11:50: Multispecies design\, care and reenchantment in times of exilic disenchanted ecologies by Wendy Wuyts \n11:50-12:10: Q&A \n12:10-13:30: Lunch break \nSession 2: Complex ecologies\, becoming \n13:30-13:40: Welcome back! \n13:40-14:10: (Ir)rationally relational? – Naturecultures in Contemporary Art by Katja Kwastek \n14:10-14:40: Presentation by Sebastian Scholz \n14:40-15:00: Q&A \n15:00-15:30: Coffee break \nSession 3: Processes of relation \n15:30-15:40: Welcome back! \n15:40-16:10: On the Modes of Existence of Living Beings: Transduction by Audrone Žukauskaitė \n16:10-16:40: You Were in the Shape of an Arrow\, and Now You’re the Shape of a Bowl \nby Jort van der Laan \n16:40-16:55: Q&A audience \n17:00-17:30: Concluding panel discussion \n17:30-18:30: Drinks \nMy 30 minute-presentation : Multispecies design\, care and reenchantment in times of exilic disenchanted ecologies\nHow can we cope with living too close to more-than-humans in times of ecological crises? This presentation explores embodied experiences of nature connection and multispecies entanglement through the everyday practices of co-designing\, inhabiting\, and caring for a circular timber tiny house in a regenerative neighbourhood in the Netherlands\, established on a former concrete wastescape. Rather than treating design as a means of managing or restoring nature\, I approach it as an ongoing practice of becoming-with. Engaging with Val Plumwood’s ecofeminist ideas\, Donna Haraway’s ethics of making kin\, Maria Puig De la Bellacasa’s more than human ethics\, Anna Tsing’s attention to the collaborative possibilities that emerge within damaged landscapes\, Jane Bennett’s notion of enchantment as an affective force that rekindles ethical attentiveness\, Astrida Neimanis’ hydrofeminism and Stacy Alaimo’s transcorporeality\, Michael Marder’s concept of exilic ecologies\, which foregrounds the shared displacement and estrangement experienced by both human and more-than-human beings under conditions of ecological crisis. Together\, these perspectives invite an understanding of care as a situated\, embodied\, and reciprocal practice of learning to inhabit everchanging disrupted worlds. \nDrawing on autoethnographic reflections\, I examine moments of pleasure\, discomfort\, vulnerability\, and surprise that arise through encounters with living and material companions. An ailanthus reclaiming disturbed soils and dancing with thunder storms\, a hornet creating its nest in a nearby abandoned structure\, and ongoing negotiations with mosquitoes reveal entanglement as neither harmonious nor merely burdensome. Instead\, closeness becomes a site where enchantment and friction coexist\, unsettling anthropocentric assumptions about health\, safety\, control and the Self. \nIn addition to my observations in and around me\, I also write and facilitate new stories\, informed by practices such as forest bathing and writing(with)plants\, decentering the human perspective and inviting for a different worldview. In this way\, multispecies design is a transformative practice of care and reenchantment\, which expands our boundaries of our (ecological) self. \n\n⏳ Time: 10:00-17:30 \n\n\n📍 Location: Nieuwe Instituut\, Rotterdam \n\n\n👄 Language: English \n\n\n\n\n\nFull event info and sign-up form: https://vu.nl/en/events/2026/too-close-the-pleasures-and-perils-of-an-entangled-existence \n\n\n\n\n\nEvent poster: Daan Timmer \n\n\nArt: Rinella Alfonso \n\n\n\n\n\nThis symposium is organised in partnership with the Environmental Humanities Center at VU Amsterdam and with financial support from VU Amsterdam and the Dutch Research Council (grant VI.Veni.221C.026 as part of the research project CINEAGRI — Global Elements of Cinema).

SUMMARY:Writing(with) water lilies
DESCRIPTION:A writing(with)plants session is a two-hour guided gathering where participants slow down\, learn more from\, with and about plants and plant people\, and foster imagination muscles. \nThe session is for free\, but you have to register\, as there are limited places\, to ensure quality of the session. \n\nWhat happens in a typical session?\n\n\nA standard two-hour session usually follows a structured\, reflective flow:\n\n\n\nIntroduction & Intentions: A brief overview of the vision behind writing (with)plants and setting a calm headspace.\n\n\n\n\nSharing Circles: Participants share personal memories\, scientific facts\, folklore\, or cultural stories related to plants as teachers.\n\n\n\n\nExploring the “Guest Plant”: The group focuses on a specific plant chosen for the session (such as mugwort\, olive\, or local forest flora).\n\n\n\n\nCreative Invitation: A guided prompt or meditation invites participants to practice “shapeshifting” or imagining the world from the perspective of the guest plant.\n\n\n\n\nReflection: A final sharing circle where attendees can read or discuss what they wrote or drew.\n\nIn this session\n\nguest plant: water lily\, an ecofeminist plant\ninspired by this academic essay: Gibson\, P.\, & Gagliano\, M. (2017). The feminist plant: Changing relations with the water lily. Ethics and the Environment\, 22(2)\, 125-147.\nWe recommend to read this paper beforehand and/or to visit a pond or a botanical garden and observe the water lily for a while.\nhost: Wendy Wuyts\nTechnical assistance: Lisa Sattell\n\nAbout water lilies\n\nWater lilies are floating and rooted. You cannot categorize them easily.\nIn Norway\, water lilies are the blood drops from a water creature called the nøkken. The Norwegian word for water lily is nøkkerose. Two years ago I wrote a blogpost about this: https://woodwidewebstories.com/2024/09/20/the-water-lily-the-serpent-and-the-nokk-an-ecofeminist-trinity/\n\nSelected quotes from the essay by Gagliano and Gibson:\n\n“Water lilies flourish in clusters and hormonally communicate together within their community. They can self-reproduce and have mobility across the water surface\, being both earthed and waterborne.” (p.125)\n“Vilified for being too passive\, too silent\, disparaged for having inferior abilities and condemned for being immobile\, the water lily nevertheless defies these anthropocentric denigrations.” (p.126)\n“This lily has an idealized history as the Nymphea bride or “veiled one.” Its long\, representational life has created its iconic status and its associations of purity.” (p.127)\n“The water lily’s roots nestle in the silt below the water but its leaves and flowers are mobile\, floating across the reflective watery surface. Water lilies communicate chemically within their vegetal community so that they can better flourish\, signaling to each other if there are adverse conditions or imminent threat.” (p130)\n“Does rootedness\, then\, discount these capacities of beginnings and becomings? What if humans\, like the water lily\, could do both? Stay rooted but also keep mobile. Plants not only move locally but across vast distances. The thirty-five species of water lilies are rooted in the soil in bodies of water but their fragrant flowers and waterproof leaves can float across the aquatic surface.” (p. 135)\n\nWhy this timing?\nIn some folklore from places which root in me\, they say that the veil between our world and other worlds is thin around 31 October / 01 November. That is why we celebrate the death and welcome their spirits at our homes. \nAs the water lily is not only an ecofeminist icon\, but also a hydrofeminist icon\, a real shapeshifter and boundary-destroyer\, she/they seem a great plant companion or familiar to share stories about visits from other worlds and boundaries. \nHow to register?\n\nThis online session is for free\, but we ask you to register beforehand.\nRegister via this link to receive the zoom link for this session: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/PytnwIOvQ4eb1aYz3uiL3w
